Spring Residency 2008
January of this year saw the start of the fourth BUILD residency
and its first collaboration. Artists Louise Hodges and Philip Mayer
began to see shared themes and interests in their practice while
studying at The University of Central England and their time together
in an artist collective in Birmingham. After relocating to Cornwall in
October of last year the BUILD residency seemed an ideal space to
explore and experiment with the possibilities of a collaborative
relationship.
Their shared interest lies in the dissection and reconstruction of the
physical and psychological properties of the domestic object, space
and situation, their past work having used photograhy, film and
installation. They prompt us to question how we identify and attach
ourselves to the objects we surround ourselves with; those
ubiquitous machines, like a fridge, a toaster, a vacuum cleaner.
Blurring the roles between object and self, they aim to force the
viewer to reconsider their relationship with these objects. Do we
understand everything that we see? Or does something else lie
between what is seen and what is understood?
Exhibition
The Spring BUILD residency exhibition, showcasing the work of artists
Hodges and Mayer developed during the residency, will be open to
the public from April 7th to April 18th at the Proctor Gallery, on
Cornwall College Camborne campus, open Monday to Friday,
10.00am - 4.30pm. The artists will present their work on the
evening of April 10th at 6.30pm. The evening is sponsored by St
Austell Brewery.
