In this newsletter there is also information about the Skills Fund, which this year once again incorporates funding from South West Screen for a Media Skills Fund. Monday 6th September 9.45am - 4.00pm, Council Chambers, City Hall, Truro This workshop, led by Brigid Howard, will look at current funding opportunities and economic trends including Government and private funding. It will also consider self financing eg via banks, partnerships etc and the pros and cons of applying for grants. During the day you will be introduced to the strategy of making a grant application, including the elements of writing a business plan, using a fundraiser and how to talk to funding organisations. Brigid is an imaginative independent consultant and project manager with an enthusiasm for new ideas and fresh approaches. She is highly skilled in communicating on a personal and written basis, with an achievement record in working with creative practices at a global level in the public and private sectors. She is also co-director of Artefact Projects (www.artefactprojects.org).
Led by Diana Johnson, freelance arts consultant. This one-day session on Child Protection will focus on developing the knowledge of this area needed by arts organisations/companies. It will enable organisations to effectively renew their child protection policy and update/develop their understanding of the law in relation to Child Protection. Individual freelance practitioners often look to organisations to work within principles of best practice - this day will work towards establishing procedures and plans relating to protecting yourself, your organisation and any groups you work with. There will be the opportunity to look at case studies in a range of contexts.
Monday 20th September 10.00am - 4.00pm, Council Chambers, City Hall, Truro 10am - 1pm Risk Assessment/Health and Safety with John Voogd 2pm - 4pm Child Protection with Diana Johnson The aim of this day is to develop practitioners ' knowledge, awareness and understanding of workplace safety. Looking at measures designed to protect the health, safety and protection of practitioners in their own workplace and that of others, such as visitors, members of the public and young people affected by the practitioner 's work activities. Due to the broad nature of this day the course will focus on developing general knowledge and awareness. Practitioners will be able to develop their understanding via a range of practical exercises. The leaders are John Voogd who is an experienced maker and freelance practitioner and Diana Johnson, a freelance arts consultant.
Thursday 23rd - 25th September, 9.45am - 5.45pm, Redruth Community Centre Because of the limited number of places available on this course there will be a selection process. If you wish to apply please submit an A4 sheet including your CV and an explanation of why you wish to attend. Applications should be with Creative Skills by Friday 27 August. This course will be run by Sally Hibbin, a producer with many years experience. She was Executive Producer on the following films: 'The Intended ', 'Liam ', 'The Governess ', 'The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain ', 'Land and Freedom ', 'Bad Behaviour '. As a producer she has, most recently, worked on 'Dockers ' (1999) directed by Bill Andersen, 'Blind Flight ' (2003) directed by John Furse and 'Yasmin ' (2004) directed by Kenny Glennan. Sally will also be joined by a film lawyer during the course. The three days will be very intensive and will cover the following areas:

The seminar leader will be Lincoln Parkhouse from "Just FX", who provide Pyrotechnics and Special Effects for Conferences, Concerts, Theatre, Film and Television. They are also leaders in the field of pyrotechnics training in the UK. This day will cover all aspects of the safe use of Pyrotechnics including presentations, live demonstrations, videos and observations. There will be hands-on opportunities to work in groups with a wide range of devices and a thorough grounding in safety procedures, testing and storage, paperwork and the law, COSHH and risk assessments. The day will finish with everyone working on a live presentation using all types of pyrotechnic devices. Handouts will be provided and a certificate of training will be given to candidates. All candidates automatically obtain a free first year's membership of the Association of Stage Pyrotechnicians www.stage-pyro.org.uk Those with respiratory conditions such as asthma should be aware that much smoke will be generated during parts of the day. Much flashing and banging will also take place! If you wish to bring a camera to capture some of the pyrotechnic displays please feel free to do so. It would also be advisable to wear work clothing and to bring a big bottle of water. · CODE OF PRACTICE FOR THE VISUAL ARTS Wednesday 20th October, 9.30am - 3.00pm, Public Rooms Bodmin (small hall) The Code of Practice for the Visual Arts seminar is designed to unwrap a wide range of issues concerning artists, arts professionals, organisations and their relationships, and present them in a simple way. It will explore ways in which models of good practice are encouraged by following an appropriate Code Of Practice which can positively influence both parties and facilitate good working relationships. The seminar is also about discovering new ways of looking at artist's practice from both an artists' and a professional's point of view. Seminar leader Lee Corner will be looking at different situation scenarios using case studies and examples drawn from past events, stimulate debate and encourage an active discussion. Lee Corner is the author of the Code of Practice for the Visual Arts, published by a-n The Artists Information Company in 2003. The UK-wide programme of Code of Practice events is an initiative of the a-n The Artists Information Company, developed in association with the APD network.
Mentoring is a term that is often bandied around in the context of career development becoming a bit of a catchall phrase to cover any relationship where one person offers help, guidance, advice or support in relation to the learning or development of another. This day is an introduction to mentoring - designed to look at what mentoring is (and what its not!) It is for all those individuals who are interested in working with a mentor- as well as for those who may wish to become a mentor for less experienced practitioners in the future. This session will be led with the assistance of Rachel Sutton, Education and Learning Officer at Arts Council South West.
This day will take place in early November. Date and venue to be confirmed. Please tick the box on the booking form if you would like to receive further information. A whole day programme for arts workers and carers who undertake creative work in Early Years settings. The aim is to develop a greater understanding of approaches and methods to creative work within Early Years settings. The morning will be practical and involve a demonstration of approaches with children from a nearby setting. The afternoon session will explore the relationship between arts workers and early years settings - looking at roles and responsibilities; planning; considering structured, semi-structured and "play" - centred approaches to arts activities. An important feature of the day will be the opportunity for networking. The session will be led by MADE who are leading exponents of Creative Work with Early Years in Cornwall and beyond. OTHER NEWS MENTORING SCHEMEOctober will see the launch of our mentoring scheme in conjunction with Creative Partnerships. The scheme is designed to support the continuing professional or organisational development of those practitioners who work within school and other educational settings. This scheme will be of interest to those with specific skills or experience relevant to working within these settings who may potentially provide mentoring support as well as to those individuals who are interested in benefiting from working with a mentor. SKILLS DEVELOPMENT FUND - INCLUDING THE MEDIA SKILLS FUND The Skills Development Fund is available to pay for an extremely wide range of activities (not just training days or courses) as long as they meet the Fund 's basic criteria. Applicants from the media sector will be supported by part funding provided by South West Screen and can apply as long as their proposals address the following skill areas, which have been identified by South West Screen: Script writing and supervision Project Management and leadership Company business skills Convergence and related digital media technical skills. The Skills Funds are operated on a rolling programme and applications are considered at the end of each month. Media practitioners can also access the South West Training Bursary Fund via South West Screen, which can provide funding for attendance at industry approved short courses, seminars and workshops within the same skill areas. Up to £1,000 per individual is available for these bursaries. We are delighted that 117 artists are taking part in the Open Studios Cornwall event, which runs over four weekends between 21 August and 12 September.
