![]() September Newsletter 2004 Dear Arts Practitioner, Great News! Creative Skills website will be going live later this week. As well as providing general Creative Skills information you will be able to register with Creative Skills interactively and have the ability to view our newsletters. There are also links to websites that relate to professional development. Work is currently underway on our rating within search engines, so you may have to be a little patient if you try to find us through that route. This Autumn newsletter gives details of the seminars that will take us through to the end of the 2004. We are already planning our 2005 programme and welcome any suggestions for seminar topics. You can post us your ideas on the website! Please remember that our seminars book extremely quickly and if you are interested in attending you do need to be prompt in sending back your application form. SEMINAR PROGRAMME - the fee for all seminars is £10· CODE OF PRACTICE FOR THE VISUAL ARTS Wednesday 20th October 9.30am - 3.00pm, Public Rooms Bodmin (small hall) Charge: £10 The Code of Practice for the Visual Arts seminar is designed to unwrap a wide range of issues concerning artists, arts professionals, organisations and their relationships, and present them in a simple way. It will explore ways in which models of good practice are encouraged by following an appropriate Code Of Practice which can positively influence both parties and facilitate good working relationships. The seminar is also about discovering new ways of looking at artist's practice from both an artists' and a professional's point of view. Seminar leader Lee Corner will be looking at different situation scenarios using case studies and examples drawn from past events, stimulate debate and encourage an active discussion. Lee Corner is the author of the Code of Practice for the Visual Arts, published by a-n The Artists Information Company in 2003. The UK-wide programme of Code of Practice events is an initiative of the a-n The Artists Information Company, developed in association with the APD network.
Monday 25th October 9.30am - 4.30pm, Opie Building, Cornwall College, Pool Charge: £10 This QuarkXpress course will introduce to those with little or no knowledge of the programme how to produce electronic print-ready documents. The course will cover the following criteria:.
Tuesday 26th October 9.30am - 4.30pm, Cornwall College, Pool Charge: £10 This course will be most beneficial to visual artists who need to promote their work via the web and want to have a go themselves, the course is aimed at practitioners with little or no experience of doing so. If you are interested in attending this course please can you let us know the programme that you will be using to produce your website - either Photoshop, Flash or Dreamweaver. (There is a possibility of running further evening sessions to increase knowledge levels to intermediate via Cornwall College.) The course will cover the following elements of designing your own website:
· What makes a good website · Navigation within a website · Using Photoshop · Using Dreamweaver At the end of the course you should be able to carry out the following: · Have the ability to analyse and evaluate various websites · Produce a navigation map using word · Optimise images using Photoshop/Imageready · Construct a basic website in Dreamweaver · CONTRACTS Wednesday 27th October 9.45am - 4.00pm, Bodmin Shire House Charge: £10 Madeline Hutchins, Director of the Independent Theatre Council from 1983 - 88, a trainer and consultant specialising in the legal aspects of running an arts business, will run this seminar. Madeline also runs SAM'S books, the UK's only specialist supplier of books to arts managers. As an artist, contracts will form the basis of most of your professional transactions. Knowing how contracts work, how to make contracts work for you, and how contract law can help you if things go wrong, can be of great benefit to you. This one day course will enable you to operate confidently and competently with contracts. The course covers the following elements: · The elements of contract · When contracts are made and important principles of contract law · Guidance on good practice in the making of contracts · The legal vocabulary of breach, excuse, frustration and damages · Your legal options on breach of contract · Guidance on how to unpick what has happened and what to do now when things go wrong · Case studies drawn from real life
Thursday 4th November 10.00am - 4.00pm, Council Chambers, City Hall, Truro Charge: £10 10am - 1pm Risk Assessment/Health and Safety with John Voogd 2pm - 4pm Child Protection with Diana Johnson This course is run in partnership with Creative Partnerships (CP)& Kernow Education Arts Partnership (KEAP). The aim of this day is to develop practitioners' knowledge, awareness and understanding of workplace safety. Looking at measures designed to protect the health, safety and protection of practitioners in their own workplace and that of others, such as visitors, members of the public and young people affected by the practitioner's work activities. Due to the broad nature of this day the course will focus on developing general knowledge and awareness. Practitioners will be able to develop their understanding via a range of practical exercises. The morning will be spent focussing on Risk Assessment /Health & Safety with John Voogd, an experienced maker, freelance practitioner and trainer. Child Protection will be covered in the afternoon by Diana Johnson, freelance arts consultant. Knowledge of this area is very important and necessary for practitioners - particularly those artists who work with people in a variety of settings. Access to training such as this is usually only available at a fee that is considerably more than £10!!
Thursday 4th November 10.00am - 16.00, Penwith Business Centre, Penzance Charge: £10 Because of the limited number of places available on this course there will be a selection process. If you wish to apply please tick the attached booking form as an expression of interest only and information will be sent to you on how to apply. Sarah Thelwall is a freelance art market strategist and marketing consultant. Her clients have included Antenna Audio, Proboscis and ETA. Previous work includes market assessment of the UK art market (for Arts Council England). She has also worked with a number of fine artists & jewellers in developing self-promotional tools. This course is designed to assist visual artists who wish to expand their network (and thence their exhibitions, commissions and commercial representation) to London's contemporary art galleries. Delegates are expected to have an action plan for progressing their career and will have already identified the key types of contacts they need to add to their network to realise their ambitions. Pre-course work will be required. Each delegate will be asked to research into a set list of commercial galleries, project spaces and independent galleries. This information will be shared with the wider group on the day of the seminar to facilitate a mapping process of target galleries to meet individual delegate's career objectives. Access to the internet is a pre-requisite. Networking actions will be planned to add specific galleries/artists to delegates' networks via activities such as group shows, exchanges, residency applications, seminar attendance etc.

7th December Truro Nursery School, 10.00am - 5.00pm Charge: £10 This course is run in partnership with Creative Partnerships (CP)& Kernow Education Arts Partnership (KEAP). A whole day programme for arts workers and carers who undertake creative work in Early Years settings. The aim is to develop a greater understanding of approaches and methods to creative work within Early Years. The morning will be practical and involve a demonstration of approaches with children from a nearby nursery. The afternoon session will explore the relationship between arts workers and early years settings - looking at roles and responsibilities; planning; considering structured, semi-structured and "play" - centred approaches to arts activities. An important feature of the day will be the opportunity for networking. The session will be led by MADE who are leading exponents of Creative Work with Early Years in Cornwall and beyond. (Those people who have already expressed an interest in this course will be given priority when booking.)
Saturday 11th December 9.30am - 5.30pm Truro School Charge: £10 In line with the increasing numbers of screenings and digital projection opportunities taking place throughout Cornwall, there is a growing demand for more practitioners who are skilled in setting up and using varied projection equipment. This workshop is ideal for dance and theatre practitioners who wish to include video projection in their performances, arts administrators interested in using it in presentations, visual artists etc. Run by Denzil Monk - film maker and Tom Harding - VJ, this will be a fully comprehensive day workshop on all aspects of digital projection from preparation (including Health & Safety and risk assessment) to the setting up and plugging in of various types of kit and projecting in various formats.
Chacewater Village Hall, COMMENCING: 9TH MARCH 2005 Charge: £20 This course will provide you with a range of skills that will help you to manage yourself, your practice or your business, projects and other people. Topics covered include: Problem Solving (recognising and developing the skills needed to analyse problems effectively), Time Management (techniques and systems to help you manage time more effectively), Negotiating Skills and Working to a Budget. The next start date for this course is 9 March 2005, at Chacewater Village Hall. It will run for 6 weeks on the following dates: 9th March, 23rd March, 6th April, 20th April, 4th May 18th May. Lunch will be provided and we will be able to pay travel and childcare costs for those who attend. This will be the fourth time that we have run this course. All the others have been fully booked and participants have graduated from it with flying colours! Early booking for the Spring 2005 course is therefore strongly recommended.
Over the years we have had a number of requests from individuals who would like the opportunity to benefit from the individualised support that could be offered by a professional mentor. This scheme offers just that opportunity to artists who wish to develop and broaden their skills working within education/participatory settings. If you would like the opportunity to receive some mentoring on this scheme please contact Creative Skills with a current CV. Please include a brief outline (150 - 200 words) of what you hope to gain from being mentored. If you have a particular mentor in mind please also include some information about the person you would like to work with. If you have not yet identified a potential mentor we will endeavour to work with you to find someone suitable. There are only a limited number of places on this scheme. Applications to receive mentoring should be received by the end of October. NEWS Do you need cash for your business idea?
