8 August 2005

Dear Arts Practitioner,

As we move into the Summer holidays and are settled in our new office in Redruth, we would like to advertise our early Autumn programme of events and useful information.

Alison Sharkey our new Animateur is now in post. Alison will be carrying out Development Needs Analysis and will be setting up monthly surgeries in North East Cornwall which are due to commence in the Autumn, further information will be available in September.

Alison has recently graduated with a fine art degree from University College Falmouth having moved down to Cornwall from the Hebrides to study. She is continuing her practice as a painter alongside this Creative Skills post. She has been working for 2½ years as a Cornwall Outreach Officer developing services for Gypsies, Travellers and ethnic minorities living in Cornwall. While living in the Hebrides she worked as a student support worker and her involvement with the local art centre enabled her to develop arts projects around mental health and education.

Those of you that subscribe to our weekly e-bulletin will notice that it has been suspended during the last 6 weeks, which has been due to internal IT problems. However, we will be launching a new way to view the e-bulletin during the next few weeks, which will be available through our website; www.creativeskills.org.uk. When the new Members area is up and running each member of Creative Skills that has subscribed to the e-bulletin will receive an email detailing a user name, password and information on the new facility. If you do not already subscribe to the e-bulletin and would like to, please mark the attached booking form. Downloadable funding forms will also be available to members through the website.

In partnership with ArtQuest -- the Professional Development Agency for artists working in London -- we are in the process of arranging an event that will enable 10 artists from Cornwall to travel to London to meet with 10 artist working in London. The visit will enable both sets of artists to engage in critical debate, have a visit to Frieze and talk to Polly Staple, curator of Frieze, and the opportunity to network with each other. CITY OF LIGHTS INVITE ARTISTS TO TENDER FOR BURSARIES

City of Lights, Cornwalls largest winter lantern festival, in partnership with Creative Skills would like to invite artists to tender for a bursary to produce a large scale processional image for the November 2005 procession in Truro.

The aim is to support emerging artists with an interest in large scale work with a strong community element. City of Lights owes its success to the innovation and commitment of the artists who have worked on it. This same spirit would be required from recipients of the bursaries.

The theme this year is Food. This theme has been chosen as it links with a lot of other initiatives such as Healthy Living in schools, the Food and Drink fair in Truro as well as Truros aspirations to become a fair trade city. But the theme can be taken both literally and laterally. City of Lights uses simple materials such as withy, bamboo, paper and glue with white light illumination.

Mentoring and instruction will be provided for one day which will include an introduction to the work of City of Lights (about to celebrate its 10th year) and instruction in making techniques and lighting methods. Also as there is a substantial educational component in City of Lights you will be required to spend one day shadowing an established artist in a school or community workshop.

It is intended that there will be workshop space available in Truro for the makes. No transport expenses are available for transporting lanterns made elsewhere.

Five bursaries are available. Applications for a bursary of £675, to include all expenses and a materials budget of £50, must submit proposals on one sheet of A4 together with drawings, a CV and a statement saying why you would like to take up this bursary and the impact it will have on your professional development. Selection is by open competition.

All submissions need to be received by September 12th.
Interviews on September 19th.

Should you need further information please contact Tony Crosby on 01872 865208.
